For months I was using Thunderbird to access Gmail. But I had so many problems with it not connecting to the Gmail mail servers that I eventually dumped it and just used the Gmail browser client. However, with the recent problems I've had with THAT, I decided to go back to Thunderbird.
BIG MISTAKE. I've only been using it today and ALREADY I'm having trouble. It worked for the first few hours but now there is email sitting in my inbox (on the browser client) that isn't coming down in Thunderbird. And I can't send anything. Whenever I try to send, it asks me for my smtp password, which I give it, then it fails. I've googled the problem and it seems common but no answers as to why or what to do.
ARRGHHH.
Had a great day though. Met three new Melbourne folks with serious MSM credentials (one has been a regular on Aussie TV, one is an Italian TV star who lives here, and one who in a senior entertainment print journalist) who all want to do shows on TPN. I think this is called momentum.
Cool!!!!!!

Why not just set up your own IMAP server? I have an old Linux box in the attic with all my emails on it. Works great with Thunderbird, my PDA, and with Squirrelmail for when I want to check my mail from any browser. It also filters out spam extremely well (Spamassassin). Limitless email address... LDAP directorys.... SMTP for outgoing messages (saves you having to rely on your IPS's clogged up server).

Check out http://www.fastmail.fm . They are one of the most reliable webmail/IMAP/POP3 providers around. Have been using them for years myself. And the founds are a couple of Aussies.
