I laughed my ass off when I heard this on the news today:
U.S. military and intelligence officials tell ABC News that they have caught shipments of deadly new bombs at the Iran-Iraq border.
They are a very nasty piece of business, capable of penetrating U.S. troops' strongest armor.
What the United States says links them to Iran are tell-tale manufacturing signatures — certain types of machine-shop welds and material indicating they are built by the same bomb factory.
So in case you missed it, the U.S. are blaming Iran for their shitty situation in Iraq.
These are the same "U.S. military and intelligence officials" who
- didn't figure out ahead of time that a dozen guys were going to fly planes into NY buildings
- were convinced Saddam was hiding WMD and was an "immediate threat"
- have spent 5 years unsuccessfully trying to find bin Laden
- thought invading Iraq would be a walk in the park
- are getting their ass kicked by a bunch of disorganized, leaderless "insurgents"
So guys... we don't believe you. Credibility-wise, you rank right up there with the guys that ran Enron. So hey, if you want to invade Iran, let's just drop the pretense, okay? Just come out and say "hey, screw it, Iran is OPEC's second largest oil producer and holds 10% of the world's proven oil reserves. It also has the world's second largest natural gas reserves (after Russia). And we want to invade it."
We'll understand. Truly. It's okay. We know your economy is frakked when the oil runs out. You've got ten years to remedy the situation or all your pension funds are in the toilet and your friends in China will be outsourcing their laundry to the US cuz of the cheap labour rates. So do whatever you have to do. Just don't insult our intelligence by making up stories to try to manufacture our consent. We'll close our eyes and pretend you don't work for us.
There's an old (zen?) saying - there are only 2 problems in life - "not getting what you want, and getting it".
I wonder if the US military realises that the only thing worse than not finding OBL would be actually finding him.........

I saw this on memeorandum yesterday and thought it was interesting.
Looking there today I see this story http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=topNews&storyid=2006-03-07T162337Z_01_N07147141_RTRUKOC_0_US-NUCLEAR-IRAN-USA.xml&rpc=22
Basically USA are saying Iram is facing "meaningful consequences" if they don't stop their nuclear program. Does the USA think we are naive not to think they have a nuclear program, and that they are the only ones allowed to have such a program.
I think not.

A perspective from an expat Aussie living in Nth America.
Bush and Co. can say whatever they want. They control all 3 wings of government, are in so tight with mainstream media and have spent the better part of a decade building paranoia among its constituents.
Bush could come out tomorrow and say that the open border with Canada is a threat to national security and that the US needs to establish a land link with Alaska and the media and population would support him... regardless of the stupidty or paradox of his actions.

Well, kids, the UN Security Council has unanimously voted today (March 30), that Iran has 30 days to get its act together... or else.
Now, I know some of you will be dying to put the boot into the US over this decision, however, unless you feel like putting it into the other 14 countries as well, I suggest you don't comment for fear of looking like a complete hypocrite.
