Last night we went to see LITTLE FISH, a new Aussie film that I hadn't heard of and only ended up seeing because there was nothing else on. Directed by Rowan Woods (you've never heard of him, unless you're a fan of that dreadful sci-fi show FARSCAPE), and starring a great Aussie cast, including:
Check out the trailer here. It doesn't do the film justice though.
Here's a quick list of things that stood out for me:
- Hugo Weaving's performance - christ, this guy can create characters. From Agent Smith to Elrond to Lionel? No fucking way.
- Cate Blanchett - she has the world at her feet and she makes this small, hard, gritty AUSSIE film.
- The Vietnamese cast, including American Dustin Nguyen. Dustin pulls off a pretty convincing Aussie accent, tinged with American and Vietnamese. Remember him from 21 JUMP STREET? Great to see an Aussie films with a heavy Viet cast.
- The kids choir singing "Flame Trees". Very moving stuff. Why didn't I get to do songs like that when I sung in school choirs?
Go see this film. It'll probably disappear due to a lack of marketing budget, but it is one Aussie film that deserves your money and a shot at the Oscar's for several of the cast and crew. Expect to see Rowan Woods snapped up by Hollywood after this. Let's hope he doesn't waste his talents making shitty big budget summer blockbusters. Speaking of which, did anyone bother to see STEALTH?
Although I didn't really see it which is weird being a Sci-Fi fan but your gonna get blasted by Farscape fans when they see you called it dreadful.
Now onto your other points I am sure I have seen for the movie on TV or somewhere else and it's a good cast. May favourite Hugo Weaving character, well loved to hate, was Douglas Jardine in the Bodyline series. You wouldn't have seen it because it is about sport but he played a great role in that.
Can Cate do no wrong? I really do need to see Veronica Guerin as one of my favourite bands actually did a song about her murder on one of their albums.
I do remember Dustin Nguyen and loved 21 Jump ST, I wish TV1 would pick it up to show on Foxtel. I always thought Holly Robinson was cute tho but then it was 20 yrs ago and I was a teenager.
I haven't seen Stealth and doubt I will because I heard it was pretty crappy. What I did see today on my extended lunch break was Serenity and it totally kicked ass. It will be a must buy on DVD when it's released. I wonder if George Lucas took notice on how to write a good story .

Hugo Weaving's best perfomance - Martin in 'Proof'.
"You've been blind all your life haven't you?"
M : "Yes."
"So why were you driving a car?"
M : "I forgot."
