If you've listened to the Personal Productivity Show that Des Paroz and I co-host, you'll know we're both HUGE fans of MindManager. I use MindMaps almost daily to do everything from plan my business to brainstorm ideas for kids parties (seriously). Well now those cunning folks at MindJet have released a beta of free software called MINDMANAGER VIEWER (Windows only). It allows people who don't have MindManager to view and print mindmaps. Very handy if you want to share MindMaps you've created with business partners, friends, colleagues, etc.
So you can get an idea of what a mindmap looks like, I've whacked together a small one on CITIZEN MEDIA. Download why_citizen_media_works.mmap
One more thing - to use the viewer, you'll want to use IE and Enable ActiveX settings:
· Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls: Enable
· Download signed ActiveX control: Enable or Prompt
· Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Enable or Prompt (not sure about Administrator approved)
And if you're serious about being productive, get the full version of MindManager - yeah sure, it costs a bomb, and I'd love to see them drop the price down to <$100, but it's still worth the investment.
MindManager is great - but, as you mentioned, not good value.
An adequate free mind mapping tool is Freemind:

Obviously nowhere near as sophisticated as MindManager but useful nonetheless...

yeah I used Freemind for a while, but MindManager is far FAR superior. Oh and it supports INK for the Tablet PC, which Freemind doesn't. :-)

I used the Mindsystems ThemeReader to create a MindManager mind map and then used the MindManager Viewer to see the mind map. The combination worked like a charm. The Mindsystems ThemeReader even has a 21 day evaluation period so that you can try the software for free and produce as many MindManager mind maps as you like. Mindsystems ThemeReader is only $39!
MindManager Viewer and Mindsystems ThemeReader make a great combination. You can find the Mindsystems ThemeReader for the MindManager Viewer at this link:
http://www.mindsystems.com.au/products/themereader/
The Mindsystems ThemeReader uses advanced thematic extraction technology to create a thematic signature of the documents major and minor themes. It them imports the information into a MindManager mind map. However, you can use the free MindManager Viewer to read the new thematic mind map of your document. You even get a Synopsis and Detailed Summary of the document right within the mind map. And you can locate any paragraph that has a theme in it simply by clicking on the Notes attachment to the theme node.
Enjoy your own personal mind maps with the MindManager Viewer and Minsystems ThemeReader now!
