This question has been on my mind since we had drinks with Tod Maffin last week. He was out here consulting to the ABC about podcasting and he works for CBC back home in Canada. After our chat I started thinking about the role of public broadcasters in the era of podcasting. Should some of the $600 million a year that goes to the ABC (check my math... 8 cents x 365 x 20 mill?) possibly be funnelled into podcasting? With sufficient funding, podcasters could continue to provide commercial-free content and continue to improve both our production and content quality. This truly is the voice of the people.
Is there a future for public broadcasting in the traditional sense?
Of Course there is. Podcasting is no were near where they are at at the moment. I think your question should have been something like is there still a need for channel 31!
