HOLY CRAP - the fan film genre just took a HUGE leap forwards. Check out this trailer and then go download the torrent of the whole film! There's got to to be a business model emerging quickly for this stuff. I'm more likely to watch fan films in the next few years than the crap coming out of Hollywood.
Yeah, there are some SFX in that trailer that made me really sit up. I'm well used to fan films, and I'm across a lot of them (esp. being an ex member of the 501st costuming group which has contributed to so many productions, worldwide), but there are bits in that trailer that had me SHOCKED at their quality. The downside of fan films, of course, is that the acting can be a bit ropey - and this one appears to be no different. In terms of a 'business model' for them, so long as they don't turn a buck, Lucas is OK with them. So there's not a lot of business to be had when you can't make a signle dollar off them. What they CAN do for someone, however, is perhaps introduce them to the world as a writer/actor/SFX guru for hire.
My favourite fan film at present is "To Know A Jedi" - and I like it simply because of the new take it brings to SW fan films. My all-time favourite fam film, however, is the immortal, "Pink Five". Absolutely-fricken-hilarious.

yeah Pink Five was funny but I want more SERIOUS fan films. I want to see people building on the mythology, taking it into new territories. Lucas needs to licence SW under CC or something. Make it easy for people to make films and just cut him in on a slice of the action or something. That would be so cool.

Jesus Sat Wars Creative-is Commons, where Lucas takes 5% net? I doubt he has the stones...
