Tony Goodson has this worrying piece on childcare. I know it's an age old issue, but it's still a worry when you see aggressive behaviour starting to emerge unexplainably from your three year-old who is in childcare. I have two 3-year olds (twins). They've been in childcare since they were about 18 months. One of them has been really aggressive towards us and his carers over the last couple of months. He still tells me he doesn't like going to childcare. He'd rather stay at home. But we both work, and no family around, so.... It's a tough decision. They both learn so much, and the social environment has to have its benefits. I think you just need to take extra effort to make sure the time you do have with them is "quality time". Although I heard someone say once that the only quality time is "quantity time"....
Well...my own observations tell me that kids who go to childcare tend to be much more aggressive early on...not sure what happens later on in their life!?
Even the kid from the principal at my boy's school had to be removed from the school where his mother was the principal. He was very aggressive towards all the other kids...the principal had to take 3 months off to find a solution to this problem.
I have seen this problem in Sydney, in Singapore, in France...seems quite universal!
It seems that kids need their family environment until age 4. Of course they also require a social environment...often the social environment provided by the family environment is good enough (cousins, brothers, sisters).
The key question is: who should stay home? Father or mother???
