Hugo Kelly (ex-Crikey) on G'Day World

We were talking here the other day about Hugo Kelly's sudden departure from Crikey. He sounded like such a fun bloke that I wanted to chat with him, so I shot him a quick email and we had coffee this morning in South Melbourne. Here's the show. I really enjoyed it.

GDAY WORLD #87

A bit of fun on G'DAY WORLD today...

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

On today’s show, Rich and I talk about:

  • Jodie Miner… GDAY WORLD listener, SQL programmer, builder, Democrat voter and CHICK. She even joins us on her mobile (and I apologize for the quality of the connection… one reason why Skyping people on their mobile is NOT going to work)

Did I mention...?

... that today is the 12 month anniversary of G'DAY WORLD, the very first Australian podcast, the very first Skype podcast, and the very first show on The Podcast Network, which was itself the very first podcasting business?

Only ten days to go!

About a year ago, there were already a couple of thousand podcasts out there. Some were quite good. A lot were about fart jokes or people talking about how cool they were. Hey! Nothing much has changed! G'DAY WORLD started off as two Aussie guys having a yarn. Then we stumbled onto the idea that we could actually interview people over Skype. It was a revolutionary concept in podcasting at the time.

I'm running another survey - this one is for you to tell us what your favourite episodes of the show have been in the last year. Pick one or pick 'em all. Up to you. But the winners will get integrated (somehow) into our birthday show.

G’Day World 2005-11-16

G’Day World 2005-11-16 (MP3 - 8MB - 22min)

Today’s rant.

This is different. This is new. Don’t confuse this with anything that’s happened in the past. There are good reasons why citizen media is different to what’s happened before. In this rant I explain some of the reason why.

Let’s make sure we don’t screw it up through greed or short-sightedness. Let’s make sure we don’t Miramax it. Anyone interested in the future of indy media should read
Down and Dirty Pictures : Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film
because I think there are LOTS of parallels.

Chomsky interview is up on G'DAY WORLD

The recent interview I did with American political activist and author Noam Chomsky is online. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

How Do You Interview The World's Leading Thinker?

On January 20th this year, a full three weeks before we even launched TPN, I wrote a blog post mapping out the Top Ten people I'd love to interview on G'DAY WORLD.

They were:

  1. Lou Reed
  2. Noam Chomsky
  3. David Lee Roth
  4. Ray Kurzweil
  5. K. Eric Drexler
  6. Garry Kasparov
  7. Bill Gates
  8. Peter Bogdanovich
  9. David Chandler (who I later discovered had recently passed away)
  10. Wendy Whiteley

Well I've spent the last few hours trying to get my head around the interview I'm doing at 1.30am tonight with Noam Chomsky.

And next Tuesday, thanks to the amazing handiwork of Renee Blodgett, I'm chatting with Ray Kurzweil.

You've got no idea how good life is. I don't care what else happens, I'm doing what I've always wanted to do - chat with some of the minds I most admire.

In the news today:

Noam Chomsky, the Jewish-American linguistics expert and an outspoken critic of U.S. and Israel, was named the world's top public intellectual by the British magazine Prospect. In a poll conduced by the magazine, in which more than 20,000 people participated, about a quarter of the voters (4,800) elected Chomsky the world's leading thinker.

So... in about 4 hours I get to interview the world's leading thinker.

Holy crap. 18 months ago my life was consumed by petty political wars inside a minor subsidiary of Microsoft. How did I get here?

Update on Noam

The man sometimes referred to as "arguably the most important intellectual alive today", Noam Chomsky, will be a guest on G'DAY WORLD on October 26th! w00t!

From Wikipedia:

Avram Noam Chomsky (born December 7, 1928) is Institute Professor Emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Chomsky has greatly influenced the field of theoretical linguistics with his work on the theory of generative grammar. He also helped spark the cognitive revolution in psychology through his review of B. F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior, which challenged the behaviorist approach to the study of mind and language dominant in the 1950s. His naturalistic approach to the study of language has also impacted the philosophy of language and mind (see Harman, Fodor). He is also credited with the establishment of the so-called Chomsky hierarchy, a classification of formal languages in terms of their generative power. Apart from his influential linguistic work, Chomsky is also widely known for his political activism, and for his criticism of the foreign policy of the United States and other governments. Chomsky describes himself as a libertarian socialist and a sympathizer of anarcho-syndicalism.

According to the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, between 1980 and 1992 Chomsky was cited as a source more often than any living scholar, and the eighth most cited source overall.

More importantly, perhaps, he was also listed in my personal TOP TEN DREAM INTERVIEW list back in Janurary 2005.

How To Live To 1000

Today I had the opportunity to interview Dr Aubrey de Grey, biogerontologist from the Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, UK, and one of the leaders in field of anti-aging research.

Now I’m not talking about the Ponds Institute kind of anti-aging… I’m talking about CURING aging. I’m talking about genetic science which will enable you to live hundreds of healthy, productive years. And I’m talking about research which, if properly funded, could deliver these results within MY lifetime.

Check out the interview here.

"ProBlogger" Darren Rowse on G'Day World

ThePodcastNetwork :: G’Day World

I had breakfast this morning with Mr Problogger himself, Darren Rowse. Darren is one of the highest earning professional bloggers out there. In May 2005 he made $14,500 from Google Adsense in a single month (and, yes, he shouted breakfast!!!)!

As you’ll hear in the interview, Darren’s a former Baptist minister and a really nice bloke. And I’m not just saying that because he bought brekky! It’s great to see a Melbourne boy showing the rest of the world that you can make a living out of blogging and still be a nice guy!
