BBC takes over Second Life
The BBC has staked a claim to a virtual tropical island where it can stage online music festivals and throw exclusive celebrity parties.

Pretty cool. They've apparenlty rented the island for a year. I want to do the same thing. Rich and I have been talking about throwing a TPN annual conference on TPN island. Need some dosh though.

geek view: way to go.cool stuff. this is the future of integrated multimedia architecture on the web.
whingeing pom view: bloody waste of licence payers' money. typical bbc. bring back the black and white minstrels show.

Heya Cam,
I was at one of Niall Kennedy's SF Tech sessions recently:

And really enjoyed a presentation by Beth Goza from Linden Labs about Second Life. She couldn't tell us about all of the private islands (though I get the impression that there is *a lot* of real estate activity going on in that space) but she did say that Microsoft (this is public knowledge apparently) have also bought an island and are investigating different ways to make use of it. For example they've constructed an ampitheatre in the game and may give presentations there so that a global audience can easily tune in.
Anyways, it was a thought-provoking presentation and, if you're reading this Beth, thanks!
