Are Joan Miro's family stupid?
From MercuryNews.com:
Today, the family of Joan Miro was upset to discover elements of several works by the Spanish surrealist incorporated into Google's logo. Google has since taken the logo off its site.
This is the kind of petty shit on behalf of "artists" and their management which deserves to be ridiculed. Who the hell, outside of serious art students, even remembers Joan Miro today? Here was a chance for the Miro estate to revive interest in Miro's legacy but instead they've acted like snotty-nosed prats. The stupidity of people like that never ceases to amaze me. Someone give them a copy of Cory's talk to listen to....

Ye, that's just maddening. Clearly they don't know Google's long tradition of doing this. Did they think it was going to be the niew Google logo or something? These things are normally only online for 24-48 hrs anyway... jesus...

yep, they are stupid.
If I were Miro I'd consider it a tribute and be very flattered.
(and also hope to sell more tshirts, calendars and prints due to revived interest, as per your thoughts, Cameron)
so much educating to be done, so little time....

So Cam, if a major media company decided it was going to take your work and broadcast something very similar to it on the radio? Would you accept the argument that "it'll only increase interest in you"?

are you kidding me? Totally. If you can make it happen, go for your life.

Precisely. For a guy who's claim to fame is his contempt for conventional painting methods and his desire to abandon them (in his words “murder” and “assassinate” and or “rape” them), his descendents sure are a bunch of pussies in comparison.
As I said on my own blog, I’m actually a bit disappointed with Google, too, given that it probably could have defended its use of Miró’s style but, I guess they probably just thought, “What a bunch of arseholes for complaining about the best free advertising on Earth…” and simply pulled the plug.

I remember Miro.
I've been to the Miro museum in Barcelona and have probably bought Miro-merch.
And I'm far from an art student.
So let's cast aside notions of homgeneity out here in the blogosphere!
His family, however, are silly. But as Lessig explains in Free Culture, at present they are mad not to!

Here is a link from a well informed copyright lawyer (according to his bio anyway) about this situation.
