I found this statement very touching:
Jarrod's father David Stehbens said his son would not have wanted the white pointer hunted down and killed.
"Jarrod was a marine biologist, he wouldn't want anything killed – as much as it is a bad thing that happened, I don't think Jarrod would like that," Mr Stehbens said.
I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one of my kids, at any age or in any fashion, and I can understand that it would be natural for a parent to want revenge, but it always seems wrong to me to want to kill a shark that's just doing what it is programmed to do. I think Mr Stehbens is showing great retraint and I admire his strength.
The Fang has been wind-surfing over this beast. He's Google-mapped the locations.

Great to hear. I always think its wrong that they go hunt down the shark in this situation.

Thanks for blogging this.
It is sad to lose a marine-lover. Being an environmentally friendly diver, I can really understand how it feels.
I should count myself lucky that sharks ain't common in the singapore-malaysia region.
God Bless his family.

I think it's a pretty common thing, these days, to not blame the shark. Blaming the shark and going out for revenge (shades of The Life Aquatic, anyone?) is a reasonably old-school ideal.

Monsieur Zisso, What would be the scientific purpose of killing it?
REVENGE.
:-)
Watched that again just recently.

I think that just because a shark kills a human doesnt automatically give us the right to kill them. If that rule applied then should we be killed for killing cows for food. THe shark is just doing what its natural instinct is - to kill and many surveys have shown that sharks actually do not like eating humans but sometimes mistake them for their common food source seals. What do we gain from killing them nothing because as with the death penalty we would never be satisfied. Listen to me i sound like im debating - i am just going to shut up now bubi

i think a shark should not be killed just because they killed someone if the same shark kills more than once it should b killed
